You hear the cart long before you see it. Iron-rimmed wheels on stone, a slow grinding that rolls up the Via Larga between the shuttered houses and comes back off the walls doubled, so the narrow street seems to grind from both sides at once. Under it, the clop of a single horse, unhurried, hollow, like a clock that has forgotten why it counts.
